Classic Australian .22 Bunny Rifle
The Lithgow Model 1 rifle is a manual cocking, single shot, bolt action .22 rifle manufactured by Lithgow Small Arms Factory (SAF) from 1945 through to late 1947 in Lithgow, New South Wales. The rifle was extremely popular throughout Australia particularly as a boy's rifle. Unlike the later Model 1A and 1B the Model 1 has no markings which reference the sporting goods company Slazenger Australia Pty Ltd.
This early Lithgow Model No.1 dates from 1945 and features a two piece stock glued horizontally through buttstock with a stock escutcheon marked with a Kangaroo and PRODUCT OF LITHGOW S.A.F. The trigger assembly is pinned to the stock. The barrel and action are made from a single piece of steel with the barrel marked with the serial number 86 19761 along with MADE BY SMALL ARMS FACTORY LITHGOW N.S.W. OF PROVED BARREL STEEL - .22 LONG RIFLE - MODEL No 1.
The slightly modified Model 1A rifle was manufactured from 1947 after Lithgow SAF contracted to supply sporting goods distributors Slazenger Australia Pty Ltd with an initial order of 15,000 rifles. More than 58,000 Model 1A rifles were eventually manufactured. These differed from the earlier Model No.1 in having the trigger assembly fixed to the receiver rather than pinned to the stock.
The updated Model 1B rifle was produced from 1949 to 1961 by the Lithgow SAF for Slazenger Australia. It's estimated that more than 104,000 rifles of this type were produced.
Early Model 1 rifles are seen with a numeric prefix stamped before the serial number. The prefixes are separated from the main serial number by an obvious space. The table below lists those prefixes observed to date and the serial number range from 1 - 21199. It's not known what the differing prefixes represented.
